The World in a Garden

Spread across more than 106 acres, the Berlin botanical garden is more than just glass houses. It’s outdoor plantings that comprise many of the garden’s 20,000 different plants and trees. The park is designed to showcase plants of the world and you can walk through everything from the grasslands of North America to the arid flora of Spain.

A couple of days ago I shared photos of inside the massive tropical and arid glass houses — you can see my photos of those over here. Below are the images I took on our hour-long walk outside.

The scented lilac walk — you were surrounded by fragrance and garden views from each of the benches.

A stunning bearded Iris — if you know the type please leave a comment.

Visiting the Outdoor Areas of the Berlin

No matter what time of the year you visit the outdoor area of the Berlin Botanical Garden it will have something to offer. There are flowers blooming throughout the year and the interest of branches and autumn leaves give the park another dimension in the colder months.

Located in the south-west part of the city, entrance was 6 euros and granted access to the glass houses, outdoor areas, and museum. There are discounts available for groups, students, and seniors.

Plan to be there for at least two hours and pop into the garden shop (wish I’d had larger luggage!) and the biergarten too. There are also benches and seating areas everywhere — just perfect for relaxing and taking in the sights and smells.

Wildflower meadows stretching across the park. They’re planted with a mixture of grass and wildlife-friendly flowers.

If I remember correctly, this gorgeous walkway is through the plants of Spain.

This massive tree can’t help to draw you in. It’s a Fagus sylvatica.

I’d say the frogs are very happy with the Berlin Botanical Garden
