Weird and wonderful produce

Unusual colors, weird scents, bizarre shapes, and gigantic sizes

The fruit and vegetable varieties you see in the supermarket are just the tip of the iceberg. What most people don’t see are the thousands of others that never make it commercially or just aren’t grown in the West. Other edibles are made incredible by just the way they’re grown. Here is a list of weird and wonderful produce that will blow your mind, beginning with one that I grow myself.

Mashed potatoes made from purple potatoes

1. Purple Potatoes

Hundreds of different types of potatoes are out there but only a handful available to the average shopper or home grower. One of the more unusual varieties that you can grow is the Purple Majesty potato and it’s purple both inside and out.

I grow and can recommend these Purple Majesty potatoes (purchase link above in the text)

It’s clearly a very unique color when served up for a meal and we had it as mashed potatoes for the first time last week. Once you get over the purple, the mash is some of the most delicious I’ve had.

2. Square Watermelons

Don’t be fooled — this isn’t a bizarre type of square watermelon. It’s an ordinary variety grown inside a square container! While the growing technique might be a bit high maintenance, the fruit stack together nicely when they need to be transported.

3. Giant Pumpkins

The trick to growing giant pumpkins is picking the right variety and Atlantic Giant is the most popular. Giant pumpkins need a lot of attention that includes plenty of feed, sunlight, water, warmth, and protection. The biggest pumpkins will put on 40 lbs of weight per day while they’re growing.

The North American record of the heaviest pumpkin came in with a ‘gargantuan gourd’ weighing over 2000 pounds. Watch more about the pumpkin and hear tips from its grower in the video below.

4. Durian Fruit

If you’ve ever traveled through Thailand or Malaysia you may have come across one of the most controversial fruits on the planet. Wildly popular, the Durian fruit is said to taste like custard with almonds but to smell like raw sewage. It’s so stinky that this ‘King of Fruits’ is banned in many public places including airports and hotels.

5. Pear in a Bottle

Eau de Vie de Poire is a French brandy that has a pear INSIDE the bottle. But how on earth do they get it in? The answer is simple: the pear is grown inside.

Early in the year, farmers carefully place bottles on the branches of pear trees. Over the season they carefully grow the pears inside and harvest the pears, bottle and all, when they’re ripe. See more about the process in the video below.

6. Fat Babies

Also known as Achocha, Fat Babies are a south american vegetable that grow on climbing vines. They grow in most climates, have very few diseases or pests, and taste like a combination between cucumber and green bell pepper. Those thorns though right?

Though the inside of each pod needs to be cleaned of seeds before cooking, those wicked looking barbs you see in the photo below are soft and silky and not in any way a danger. If you have trouble growing green peppers in your climate, you might want to try growing Fat Babies.
